Tesla's Top EV Nears Its True Wagon Destiny

Tesla Unveils the Model YL: A New Era of Space and Performance
Tesla has introduced a significant upgrade to its popular Model Y, offering enhanced comfort, improved performance, and an extended wheelbase. Since its launch in 2019, the Model Y has become one of the most successful vehicles in Tesla's lineup, even surpassing the Toyota RAV4 as the top-selling car globally in 2023.
To maintain this momentum, Tesla released a redesigned version of the Model Y earlier this year, featuring updated styling, better aerodynamics, and a more refined cabin for a quieter driving experience. However, the company is not stopping there. It is preparing to introduce an even more advanced version of the Model Y, with notable improvements that will enhance both space and power.
The Model YL: A Larger, More Powerful Option
The new variant, called the "Model YL," was teased by Tesla through a Weibo post, indicating it will start production this autumn, initially available only in China. Additionally, Tesla has applied for a sales license with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), signaling its commitment to launching the vehicle in the region.
As the name suggests, the Model YL is a long-wheelbase version of the standard Model Y, giving it a more wagon-like appearance. According to official filings, the Model YL measures 195 inches in length, 66 inches in height, and features a wheelbase of 119 inches. While the width remains the same at 75.6 inches, the longer wheelbase adds six inches, eight inches in overall length, and an extra inch in height compared to the standard model.
This increased size allows the Model YL to accommodate up to six passengers, making it ideal for family use. It also brings the vehicle closer in footprint to the Model X, which is approximately 199 inches long with a slightly shorter wheelbase of 116 inches.
Enhanced Powertrain for Greater Performance
The larger dimensions of the Model YL come with added weight, as the vehicle now weighs 4,603 pounds—211 pounds heavier than the standard Model Y. To handle this increase, Tesla has equipped the Model YL with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) powertrain. This includes a 142-kW motor at the front axle and a 198-kW motor at the rear, resulting in a combined peak power output of 340 kW (456 horsepower).
This level of power makes the Model YL more powerful than the current Long Range Model Y and comparable to the outgoing Model Y Performance. The upgraded powertrain ensures that the Model YL delivers strong acceleration and handling, making it a compelling choice for drivers seeking both performance and space.
Availability and Future Plans
At this point, Tesla is nearly ready to begin producing the Model YL in China. The filing with the MIIT represents one of the final steps required before the vehicle can be officially sold. While no official announcement has been made about bringing the Model YL to other markets, there are several reasons to believe it could eventually reach the United States and other global regions.
China’s electric vehicle market has grown increasingly competitive, with local brands like BYD gaining significant traction. In the first part of the year, BYD reported a 359% growth, while Tesla experienced a 49% decline during the same period. This highlights the need for Tesla to offer more options to retain its market share.
Additionally, the Model X, Tesla’s flagship SUV, is overdue for an update. The Model YL could serve as a temporary alternative until the Model X receives a major overhaul. If the Model YL does make its way to the U.S., it is expected to carry a premium similar to the 6- and 7-seat variants of the Model X, which add $6,500 and $3,500 respectively to the base price.
